Hula, as you might suspect, originated in the Hawaiian Islands by the original Polynesian inhabitants there. It’s accompanied by song (known as “mele”), chant (“oli”), or both.
Hula has many sub-types or styles. The two primary ones are “Hula ‘Auana” and “Hula Kahiko”. Early Westerners who first witnessed hula saw the “kahiko” style.
Hula as we know it is a Westernized version of the “kahiko” that evolved during the 19th and 20th centuries. It’s accompanied by ukelele, guitar, and even the double bass.
Like other cultures, Hawaiians’ was passed down over many generations via oral tradition. Chants were learned, sung, and shared. Dance was a natural part of Hawaiian ritual, culminating in what ultimately became known as the hula dance.
